Combat Rating is a crude measure of your fighting skills in EV Nova.
It is based the sum of the strengths of the ships you destroy (multiplied by an internal multiplier for adjustment), with larger ships generally being worth more points. See Ships by Strength (EV Nova) for a listing of potential targets.
Combat rating is just a score of how many "points" you've gotten from ships you killed. Both a Shuttle pilot and a Raven pilot can get to 'Frightening', the only difference is how quickly they can do it. Do note, however that you'll need Thunderheads or Lightnings to get up to 'Very Very Frightening'.
Storylines[]
Some storylines require a certain minimum combat rating to begin. This value which is listed as 'kills' can be found in the pilotlog for any pilot.
The Heraan Storyline begins to require extremely high combat ratings as it progresses, reaching heights such as 12500 (nearly Deadly).
Planetary Domination[]
Once a combat rating of 'Deadly' is reached a player's demands for tribute from planets will be taken seriously and the planet's defense fleet will be launched.
