Credits

The credit is the monetary unit in Escape Velocity Nova. Credits can be used for many useful purposes:

Purchasing outfits, weapons, and ships
Hiring escorts
Paying bribes
Buying commodities and fuel

There are many means to earn credits, such as trading, hauling cargo, pirating, and working for governments or corporations.
