Derelict missions occur when you board a pre-disabled ship in a system. You have to beat any pirates to them. You'll either fall into a pirate trap (and a pirate fleet will jump in and attack shortly) or you'll meet the grateful crew who'll request that you transport them to a nearby planet for 75k.
