Escape Pod and your former ship
"By the time you factor in the costs of training, qualified pilots are, almost without fail, far more valuable than the ships they fly. So most governments and major organizations fit this device to their vessels to protect their investment. Though fairly expensive, a fair number of independent pilots who, quite understandably, highly value their own lives, also use escape pods. Unfortunately, no insurance company worth its salt would ever offer ship destruction insurance. Let's face it, with the current unstable climate, travelling the space-lanes is hardly the safest way to make a living..."
An Escape Pod is an unguided, self-contained system for safely exiting a spaceship in distress. Once escape has been achieved, the pod functions as a lifeboat by providing life support until its occupant is rescued.
The collective noun is a tragedy of escape pods.
Gameplay[]
When your ship is exploding, you have until its final explosion to hit the eject keybind (default alt-X) or you will die. You can practice with the self-destruct sequence (default alt-minus).
Using an Escape Pod will provide you with a new Shuttle over one of the starting planets. You will also have your legal records reset to the basic values for most governments. For most governments that's "No Record" (0) but for the Nil'kemorya that's "Offender" (-5).
If you're not playing strict play don't use it at all, except for roleplaying purposes. Waste of time, money and space since it wastes a ton and you can simply reload your pilot if you die. Never use an escape pod if you have Vell-os powers. You'll lose them and won't be able to gain them back without a plug. Qaanol's Fixes provides a fix for this issue.
Always get an Auto-eject system if you buy an Escape Pod. Why worry about desperately finding and hitting the "eject" key combo when your ship is breaking apart? Some ships like the Viper explode too rapidly to manually eject.
Some fighters can act as an escape ship allowing you to keep fighting even if you lose your main ship. The advantage is you get something better than a Shuttle and you get to keep your legal rating and missions. On the other hand you're still vulnerable to stray crossfire. The auto-eject system works for escape ships too.
