The F-23 Fed Viper is a Federation ship in Escape Velocity Nova. In order to acquire a Viper, you either must have scouted Moash space for the Bureau, furthering their ambitions of controlling the Aurora Empire or disable and capture one.
"A few intrepid hot-rodders noticed that one particular Power Racing sled, the Viper, took very well to a bit of extra weight in the form of armor and armament. With a little engine tweaking, these modified Vipers (designated F-23) were selected by the Federation as the mainstay of their fighter wings." ― Buying a Federation Viper
Despite being merely a militarized version of a popular racer, the Fed Viper became the main interceptor employed by the Fed Navy. They can be fired from a carrier using the Viper Bay. The F-23 chassis was the genesis of the Anaconda fighter-bombers.
Stats[]
"A few of these up your sleeve could greatly enhance your fighting strength. Dealing with hotshot Viper pilots will be the death of you, though." ― Hiring a Federation Viper

Enter the Fighter Class and we'll make an ace out of you yet. Despite having a jammer, the Fed Viper does not require a Protective Technologies License.
Wild Variants[]
Shipvariant stat changes are relative to the stats of the basic model. The basic model is Fighter Class.
The following shipvariants are unavailable in the shipyard and must be captured in the field.
Heavy Fighter Variant (#223)[]

|
The Heavy Fighter Variant features some notable steps backwards that would hinder it as a player ship, such as the increased disable threshold (which impinges on the value of armor upgrades) and the loss of a hyperjump (adding a Battery Pack undoes any outfit space gains). It's slower and turns worse too.
Auroran Outfits Detected (#224)[]

This ship variant trades a lot of rotatability and a hyperjump for some speed and superior ballistic weaponry.
Gameplay Analysis[]
"What is there to say? It's one of several Viper variants in the game, but it's still a rather weak ship. Avoid being surrounded, and you'll have no problem with them." ― EVula Survival Guide
The Fed Viper keeps pace with the Civilian Viper and outruns both the Pirate and the Rebel Viper. However, it is not as durable as either of the latter and its launch bay is a good deal heavier than its counterparts.
Images[]
The Federation Viper was made by Scott Vardy who modeled the Fed Viper, then Dave Williams made the rest based on his original. Textures were by Phil and Steve Chick.
