The jump drives on your Starship can propel you through Hyperspace. Jump drives are actually a relatively new invention in the Novaverse, only existing post-Colonial Council. Jumps must be undertaken along jump routes. Curiously, jump routes appear to follow the layout of the old Hypergate system, with Sol having long jump routes directly to its neighbours with hypergates. It's theorized that Hypergates clarified the fabric of hyperspace, making hyperspace travel easier. This is also why the Auroran colony on Habilis is unable to find additional jump routes to the south; hypergates were never used in that area of space. However, this theory does little to explain the web of links in Wraith space or the tangle of links in Krypt space.
History[]
Jump drives were invented by the warlords on Aurora. They used them to take over the surrounding space. Resistance was perpetuated by the farmers on Adek Loral, who stole a starship and spread the secret of jump drives to the subjugated peoples.
The Leviathan, Pegasus, Star Liner and IDA Frigate are examples of ships that did not originally have jump drives. Surviving examples of these ships had to be retrofitted with them when the technology spread to the Federation.
