The Light Cannon has the distinction of being the lightest tech weapon in the game. It deals the same amount of damage as a Light Blaster, but spread equally across shields and armor. It also has a longer range, less inaccuracy and lower reload.
Most pilots prefer this to the Light Blaster because it enables them to fight enemies that have short ranges but are very powerful, such as the Manticore, even when the player is flying a small ship such as a Shuttle.

Light Cannon on a Lightning
"When they were developing the Lightning Heavy Fighter, Rauther discovered that the traditional Light Blaster just didn't suit the ship's basic load-out. So they went away and tinkered with the design somewhat, and they came up with a weapon they called the Light Cannon. It isn't quite as powerful as the Light Blaster, but it fires faster, its shots reach a little further, and it takes up a little less space as well. Every Lightning to roll off their production line has three of them. Not all pilots like them, because they are twice as expensive as the ubiquitous Blaster, but most agree they are a somewhat better product..."
The Light Cannon is often seen as the new and improved Light Blaster. The Light Cannon was created specifically for the Lightning heavy fighter and has since been made available for other ships.
Despite the radically different appearance (noting the entirely different rectangular gun barrel), judging from the description this weapon is essentially a modified blaster and therefore may also be a photonic weapon.
This weapon is easily available on Rauther and New Ireland. All Lightnings and Fed Scout Ships carry these as stardard armament. They may also be present on some variants of Heavy Shuttle or Rebel Viper.
