The Aurora Industries Phoenix is an Auroran ship in Escape Velocity Nova. To obtain a Phoenix, you either must have been inducted as a Heraan warrior by the priesthood on Gungungun or disable and capture one.
"The Phoenix is yet another example of the Auroran will to survive. The Phoenix is slow and turns badly. One would think that it would be target practice for enemy pilots. It is, but it has one redeeming feature: it has almost as good armor plating as a Thunderhead. They plough through fire corridors with impunity, and attack in groups to maximize firepower. The Phoenix can wear a missile from an Anaconda, but a Viper will stay on its tail and pound it mercilessly. Suffice to say that Phoenix pilots suffer the greatest rate of attrition of any group in the Auroran armed forces." ― Buying a Phoenix
The Phoenix is a medium starfighter with missiles. It can be fired from a carrier using the Phoenix Bay.
The Phoenix strikes a mid-ground between the Anaconda and the Thunderhead. It's not as fast as the Anaconda and not as well protected as the Thunderhead, but it carries almost as much weaponry as one while being faster.
Stats[]
"The workhorse and mainstay of Auroran fleets, the Phoenix is a piece of work to behold. Built with no care for appearances, and a single-minded drive to smash the enemy under hammering blows, the Phoenix looks like it could eat Federation fighters for breakfast. You know that this is often not the case, as appearances can be deceiving. You do know, however, that you would not like to be on the receiving end of its prodigious missile barrage." ― Hiring a Phoenix
Va Thamgiir (#156)[]
For this base model only, stat changes are relative to the Firebird, Thamgiir Class.

Interestingly, the Phoenix is the same price as the Firebird.
Wild Variants[]
Shipvariant stat changes are relative to the stats of the basic model. The basic model is Phoenix, Va Thamgiir.
The following shipvariants are unavailable in the shipyard and must be captured in the field.
Va Themgaar (#305)[]

This shipvariant recharges its shields in less than a minute.
Frunch'ek (#306)[]

This shipvariant sports a railgun and 30 missiles. A conservatory of 6 of these fighters can take out heavy vessels quite quickly but they'll have some trouble once out of ammunition or if the enemy has weapons, which can break up a conservatory of these fighters very easily.
Technical Variants[]
The following shipvariant is unavailable in the shipyard and serves a particular gameplay purpose.
Va Thamgiir, Initiate (#390)[]

It sports disabling weaponry in turret slots, bizarrely enough.
Gameplay Analysis[]
"The Phoenix's (only) good quality is it's heavy payload for a ship of it's size: at least 10 radar missiles (30 on the Frunch'ek variant), when combined with it's tendancy to swarm with other Phoenix and Firebird fighters, can make this quite the capable fighter." ― EVula Survival Guide
It is rather comparable to the Fed Anaconda in role, the differences being mainly speed, armour and firepower. The Phoenix has Radar Missiles over IR Missiles giving it a larger punch in bombing runs as well as greater tracking capacity leading to a more likely chance of the payload meeting its target. It also comes with the more useful and long range Fusion Pulse Cannon over the nigh-useless Light Blaster. In return for its advantages in power and protection, it's slightly slower.
A Phoenix with a capable pilot may be able to stay on the tail of a Fed Destroyer and constantly hit it in the rear, taking advantage of blind spots. But then, Fed Destroyers almost let you do this...
One way to outfit a Phoenix is to buy 150 Radar Missiles as player characters are not subject to the same logistical constraints as Auroran warriors.
If you go up against a conservatory of Phoenixes, take advantage of their unique speed bracket to separate them from their faster Firebird friends and slower Cruiser allies and then finish them off as a pure unit.

The Phoenix was modelled by Dave Williams, who also did a fair amount of the textures. The Phoenix is a gunship variant of the Firebird, which it shares a chassis with.
