Factional variants of the Argosy | |||

The Senginar Hmel Pirate Argosy is a pirate ship in Escape Velocity Nova. This craft is unavailable for most of the Vell-os Storyline.
"How the advanced Heraan Argosy fell into the hands of pirate shipwrights is a matter of hot debate in some circles. The story that the ship dealer spins for you maintains that the plans were snatched during a daring hit-and-run raid several years ago. The truth of the matter is that Aurorans can be bribed, as can all humans throughout the galaxy. Senginar Hmel, the noteworthy shipwright, has been brutal with the original design spec, and sadly much of the original beauty of the lines of this ship has been destroyed, performance boosts aside." ― Buying a Pirate Argosy
The Pirate Argosy is a Pirate modification of the Heraani freighter that demonstrates that not all factional variants are improvements. It's more expensive and you get very little in return, even being worse in some ways. It reintroduces weaknesses typical of an Auroran ship such as taking an eternity to jump to lightspeed (despite the nacelles!) and reduces the size of the cargo hold.
Stats[]
"The crew of this Argosy eye you warily as the captain shows off the more impressive parts of the ship. «You'll have to forgive them,» he says with a sigh. «We've just come from a bad situation. We took on a small Fed supply convoy that turned out to be armed to the teeth. I tell ya,» he frowns, «there's something going on here. Something big.»" ― Hiring a Pirate Argosy

It appears in two "advanced" düdes for the Pirates and Marauders. b8888 is activated when the player acquires a capable ship, so this shipvariant serves the purpose of filling up the galaxy with more fodder pirates when the player is ready.
Gameplay Analysis[]
"This is a very fair light freighter with heavy defenses. Although certainly not a killer, it can defend itself against most light attacks quite admirably." ― EVula Survival Guide
The Pirate Argosy is one of the more mediocre ships in the class of Pirate-modified ships. Veteran privateers overlook the Argosy in favor of the more advanced iterations of the Valkyrie and Starbridge. Whether the Argosy should be considered at all is a matter of style. Can you salvage this ugly duckling? 🫵
Its Hail Chainguns falter against larger ships and its turning capabilities are lacking, but there may be a remedy to these issues. Sell a Hail Chaingun and obtain a Vectored Thrust unit. It's got plenty of space to spare if you're thrifty. Discover the Auroran special: one each of a Hail Chaingun, Fusion Pulse Cannon and 100mm Railgun. Augment them with a Radar Missile Launcher, chosen for the greater availability of its ammunition. Acquire a Mass Retool if necessary. You now have a scrappy little freighter that will always have a tool at its disposal in any situation.
